35 children at risk in the care of OSE participate in a memory tour of the Camp des Milles

It is an experience that will have marked the OSE children and their supervisors. On Wednesday October 26 and Thursday October 27, a trip to the Milles Camp Memorial Site brought together 50 young people and educators of OSE.

Located a few kilometers from Aix-en-Provence, in the South of France, the Camp des Milles is the only internment camp in France that may be visited. From 1939 through the end of the war, 10,000 foreign people fleeing Nazism, including Jews, were interned within its fences. Of these 10,000, 2,000 were deported in the summer of 1942.

OSE was particularly active in this camp, helping Jewish families to flee to the USA and rescuing Jewish children.

This pedagogical trip was conceived by the educational teams of OSE in the framework of a partnership with the Camps des Milles Foundation.

The first day, which ended with a picnic in the wild and preserved costal national park outside the city of Marseilles, followed by a brief city tour, was marked by emotional moments when returning to the youth hostel: a tribute was paid to the 6 million Jews killed during the Shoah: the young people read texts in their memory as well as testimonies of saved children.
The second day was devoted to the visit of the Camp des Milles. On the road, the young “OSE ambassadors” had the opportunity to listen to a message of encouragement from Patricia Sitruk, OSE’s General Manager, stressing the importance and symbolism of their presence in the historical traces of OSE.

During the interactive visit, conducted by Katy Hazan, historian of OSE, the young people discovered the destiny of 10 children described in OSE’s exhibition The Rescue of Jewish children in France during the Second World War, which is on permanent exhibition at the Camp des Milles. The visit was followed by a workshop of reflection and exchange on the theme of indoctrination.

All together, these young people aged 11 to 16, coming from different backgrounds and hosted in day care centers, children’s homes and foster families, received a lesson and a message of life. Importantly, this was also a new and meaningful step by OSE in the field of educational action against racism and anti-Semitism.

Successful opening day for the Café des Psaumes in Lyon

After the successful expansion of this program throughout Western Paris and the suburbs with four “Seeds of Psalms”, the famous “Café des Psaumes” on rue des Rosiers has opened in the Greater Lyon area, in Southern France. This is a new chapter in the young and promising history of this social café, highly praised by its visitors and local authorities, and which has a tradition of serving primarily Jewish seniors. On Thursday 1 December, nearly a hundred people participated in the launch of the Café des Psaumes in Lyon.

This new Café des Psaumes Lyon-Métropole, based on the model and in the spirit of the one created 7 years ago in the rue des Rosiers, in the heart of the Jewish district of Paris, will become a central location for meetings and exchanges for the elderly people of the Jewish community of Lyon and the surrounding area.

Among the activities: conferences, meetings with writers, choir recitals, introduction to information technology, etc., offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 2.30 pm to 6 pm.

On the opening day, OSE historian Katy Hazan presented a conference on “the organization of the rescue of Jewish children in Lyon during the Second World War, through some of the great OSE figures of the time, such as Georges Garel, Charles Ledermann and Elisabeth Hirsch”.

Finally, Salomon Malmed, a witness and former child of OSE living in Lyon, told the crowd about his personal history and connection to OSE.

Long live the Café des Psaumes!

OSE and the victims of terror: an assessment of 18 months of the Psycho-trauma and Resilience Unit

After the January 2015 terrorist attacks in France, OSE created the Psycho-trauma and Resilience Unit (PRU), meant to provide psychological support to the victims of terrorist attacks and their families and relatives.

The PRU is based in OSE’s Health Center, in the 12th district in Paris. The team brings together around 40 psychologists and psychiatrists with different professional backgrounds.

OSE was able to create this unit on very short notice thanks to the experience, the commitment and the responsiveness of all its teams. Several training sessions took place between May 2015 and February 2016, given by internationally recognized Israeli experts in the field of psycho-trauma from the Israel Trauma Coalition (ITC) and by French legal and clinical experts.

The Unit offers individual consultations by psychiatrists and clinicians for the people who could be affected by the attacks (direct victims, their relatives, witnesses, regular customers in bars where shootings took place…).

In the event of a crisis, the Unit is ready to take care of the victims, acting in partnership and cooperation with the local and national care system activated by the authorities: the Unit was called up after the attacks in Paris on November 13th and more recently in Nice on July 14th.

The Unit provides briefings and training sessions to meet the requests made by the institutions that receive vulnerable people: students, children at risk, elderly people, Holocaust survivors, and people with disabilities.

Schools were affected by the attacks as a result of the exceptional security measures that were required, causing powerful anxiety for the children and their parents, as well as their teachers. The Unit is currently training psychologists in order to prepare the pedagogical teams to face potential crises.

The PRU is also participating to national enquiries started after the 2015 terrorist attacks.

2015-2016’s achievements:

– About 500 interviews
– 77 interventions in classes after the 2015 attacks, addressing 1,886 children
-25 interventions to prepare teachers : 250 of them followed between 1 and 3 lessons
-18 interventions in Jewish community centers, addressing 230 people

The Unit has received the support of the JDC, the UJA-NY Federation and the FMS.

Civic Service in Israel with OSE: already 60 volunteers in less than a year

On Sunday 6 November, 31 young volunteers from all over France flew to Israel. They joined 14 volunteers who had arrived at the end of August 2016, and followed the first cohort of December 2015. These young French volunteers are engaged for a period of 9 to 12 months in educational and social organizations in a dozen of cities throughout Israel. The Israeli Ministry of Social Affairs and the Israeli Volunteer Association are helping to accompany the volunteers there and make them discover the many facets of the country and its society.

To identify the most motivated, OSE examined more than 400 applications and retained the candidates for civic service for their motivation, the quality and the appropriateness of their application. For instance, Nathalie, 23, who has a diploma in social work, has strong expectations: “To discover another country, another culture … To also discover different medical and social approaches from the French ones. Finally, I also want to increase my knowledge and professional skills, in the field of psychiatry, in terms of teamwork, relationships, sharing, and any other knowledge that I could be enriching. ”

Or Cassandra, 22, who studied nursing at the hospital in Rennes and who has worked as a nurse in nursing homes, in neurology and psychiatry, will accompany adults with autism in a dedicated center of the Alut association in Jerusalem.

The volunteers had two days of training prior to their departure to Israel. On the program: a presentation on the notions of civic engagement, secularism and international solidarity, an initiation to project management and an awareness to intercultural notions, and training in first aid. The highlight of this pre-travel training was without any doubt their visit at the Israeli embassy where they were warmly greeted by Mrs. Aliza Bin-Noun, Ambassador of Israel to France, as they received a presentation of the Israeli society. They were then welcomed at the National Agency of Civic Service by its President with whom they were able to have an open discussion.

OSE received its accreditation as operator and coordinator of the International Civic Service in Israel in September 2015. OSE is fully involved in this government program on the civic engagement of French youth and intends to develop it further.
